Wide area networks enabled by applications like PDV’s DispatchPlus have gotten even wider coverage capabilities – without the need for more devices – through integration with smart phones and tablets.

ChiComm Account Executive Todd Niccum says the new feature is particularly a hit with company owners and managers who are already juggling multiple handhelds, including their personal cell phones, business cell phones, tablets and laptops.

“Another device wasn’t what they were looking for,” Niccum said.

The makers of DispatchPlus, our wide area network application for MotoTrbo radios, have been busy this quarter with some new features we’re pretty excited about, including private address book. The address book functionality allows private calls between MotoTrbo users and Motorola’s Wave Mobile Communicator.

pdvWireless developed DispatchPlus as a go-to work management solution for dispatch-driven mobile workforces: The wide area network application gives dispatchers real-time information on drivers’ current location, route and communications, enhancing the power of MotoTrbo radios.

The application’s existing features already have customers talking, including superior voice quality, private and group calls, and text messaging – all for less than the cost of a cellular plan. The chairman and vice chairman of pdvWireless are the co-founders of Nextel Communications, a legacy that gives customers confidence in the application’s effectiveness.

The new functionality promises more of the same, so let’s take a closer look.

When ChiComm Account Executive Todd Niccum talks to customers about DispatchPlus, our wide area network application for MotoTrbo radios, they all have the same reaction: “I can't believe how clear the communication is between the radios.”

DispatchPlus was developed and brought to market by pdvWireless, whose chairman and vice chairman are co-founders of Nextel Communications. The strength of the Nextel brand has helped win over both cell phone customers looking to make the sensible switch to radios as well as non-Motorola radio users looking to step up their service, Niccum said.

“The superior voice quality isn’t matched by any other radio or cellular system,” he says. And when customers hear of pdvWireless’ history, they say, “’Ooh, I used to have Nextel, they work great.’”

“This won’t happen to me” or “We’ve been doing this for years, we won’t get caught” are things you may want to stop telling yourself when it comes to operating within your assigned radio channels.

If you’ve been operating on an improper radio frequency for years or even months, don’t think you’ve managed to find a loophole with the FCC.

Well 2013 is finally over. For some of you it was a good year, for the radio business it was a slow year. Coming off of the FCC’s Narrowbanding Mandate and all the radios sold in 2012 made us really look at our business and determine to focus on Service! Many of the police and fire departments are in limbo this year as Grants and Funding have not been as plentiful in the past years. In addition, with the FCC putting a freeze on the 470Mhz band, many police departments are sitting on their hands waiting for a direction from the FCC; that means slow radio sales.

The good news for some of you is that you are keeping your radios an extra year or two (maybe three). Your budgets are being spent on maintaining your existing equipment, whether a service contract for a 24 hour response or just routine maintenance. It is prolonging the inevitable. Technology is changing, but service teams, like Chicago Communications, are equipped with the latest in technology to meet whatever challenge is thrown towards us. From basic analog radio systems to the most advanced P25 Public Safety systems we can monitor and respond to service outages in any required timeframe you need. We can consult on your equipment with our contracts department to see whether it makes sense to put your equipment on a contract or actively seek replacement because of age or parts issues.

"So you are the IT Manager and you were just put in charge of the radio communications..."

Sound familiar?

I recently glanced through an article in the new (November 2013) Public Safety Communications Magazine from APCO. The title of the article “Communications Manager or IT Manager?” made me think of our own business. It shouldn’t matter if you’re a radio technician or IT technician…electronics is electronics, right? I wish I could say it was that easy.
