Meet Our Techs: The Experience Behind ChiComm

It’s not often I sit down with a technician who’s been around long enough to experience significant political events, numerous civil rights movements, several wars, plus the development and infancy of several revolutionizing technologies. Realizing I have a small space here to summarize our discussion, I will do my best to highlight the most relevant of Bill’s path to ChiComm.

The Experience Behind ChiComm

So the saying goes: If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. For Mike it wasn't that he didn't succeed in his work, it was that he didn't succeed in finding a place of work that matched both his interests and abilities. Not at first, at least. Mike traveled a unique career path before landing at Chicago Communications.

Jerry Beres

Jerry is going on 28 years as a Chicago Communications technician. "Not many people can say they've worked for the same company 28 years, it just doesn't happen very often anymore,” he says. “I’m a loyal person and if you take care of me, I'll take care of you." According to Jerry, there have been enough challenges, variety and growth to keep things interesting and enjoyable all these years. Let’s take a closer look into those years to see if he’s right.

Josh Lary

Our management team often receives letters from customers with feedback about their experiences with ChiComm’s staff. Recently one was received regarding an experience with one of our techinicians, Josh Lary:

"He really was thorough and honestly my impression was that this guy really cared. He was persistent and didn’t stop until he had exhausted all possible contributing aspects of our coverage issues over there. You and I have been dealing with people and different personalities for many years, but Josh really gave me the impression that he and I had a partnership with this radio problem (might sound a little strange, but I’m sure you’ve occasionally come across an individual who seems to “get it”) and at the end of the day when he left…the radio signal had been improved greatly."

John Larson

John has been a technician for Chicomm for 15 years and is now a System Integration Supervisor who most enjoys working with 9-1-1 dispatch centers. He didn’t quite follow the most typical path to get there though.

Back in 1980 John started junior college to study computer programming while also working at a grocery store. After realizing computer programming wasn’t a good fit for him, he took an electrical job offered to him from a family member. He took a liking to the electrical field and spent many years learning the trade. The electricians he worked for dealt with residential & construction projects for electrical wiring in housing. He learned how to do everything he knows hands-on, in the field.

Leon Tompkins

Leon started for Chicago Communications in 1968--giving him a whopping 43 years of experience! Though his time here has been the majority of his career, if it weren't for a couple minor gigs, he may have never made it to ChiComm in the first place. So how is it that he did stumble upon the company? Let's start from the beginning.

Fred Budge

Fred has 38 years of experience being a Bench & Field Technician. He started at Chicago Communications in 1991. He specializes in portable and mobile two way radio component work, which is rare today. A lot of other shops don't go past a certain point of repair into the detailed component issues, but Fred still does.

Career History: After graduating from high school in 1967, Fred attended a college with a 2 year Technician/Electronics/Engineering program where he determined his interest was in communications. Just after finishing, he was drafted into the army for the Vietnam war for 2 years. Afterwards, he started working for MetroCom, which was a chief competitor with Chicago Communications for many years.  He worked as a Bench/Field technician there for about 17-18 years until they were bought out by ChiComm. He decided to stay on with ChiComm doing the same type of technician work. He continued his education by taking courses and teaching himself on the job in addition to the 2 weeks a year that ChiComm sends him to training sessions.
