Weather Alerts for Two-Way Radios

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray on Monday, August 31, 2015

It seems that most organizations have at least some degree of emergency preparedness ready to go. This can include an evacuation plan, alarm systems, or a detailed list of who is responsible for what. As the very nature of an emergency is that it is unexpected or unplanned, how you respond to it needs to be based off of a clear and effective plan. This all starts with being prepared.

One of the most common emergencies that can impact any and all industries, is a weather emergency. You know the kind: storms, hurricanes, high winds, blizzards, fog, etc. All of these natural events can cause delays and safety issues to some extent, and they can all impact you in a major way.

So rather than waiting for your local TV broadcast to interrupt “your regular scheduled programming” with a weather alert, or for your neighborhood weather siren to go off, you can actually be alerted directly on your two-way radio via Teldio technology.

How does it work?

Using a standard WX-250 Weather Receiver, MOTOTRBO two-way radio users can receive both audio and Teldio_Weather_Alerttext alerts when hazardous weather is approaching. This receiver monitors national weather warnings and then broadcasts them directly to a user’s radio.

This means that if something like a tornado warning or thunderstorm watch is in your area, you will be alerted immediately, all without having to look into it yourself. This allows you to get ahead of the weather, and enact your safety plan right away. Or, in less dangerous weather where safety isn’t as much of a concern, you can take the necessary steps to keep things running smoothly.

Also, for users who have Teldio’s Alarm Control System (ACS), this weather alert system integrates smoothly. ACS fulfills its duty in keeping users up to date and ensures that all weather alert notifications send automatically, and are reliable. These notifications are automatically sent to MOTOTRBO two-way radios, and ACS is able to dispatch them to the right person based on the time of day and/or the nature of the alert.

What Industries Should Use This Technology?

In short – every industry could adopt this weather alert system. After all, when severe weather strikes, it can have an impact on anyone at any time.

Specifically, those in the following industries will find these weather alerts particularly helpful and valuable:

What are the most common use cases?

When you think of an alert system, the two primary things that should come to mind are safety and efficiency. Here are some of the ways these weather alerts are used:

  • Relocate staff to a safe area in a timely manner
  • Alert employees or students to begin evacuation procedures
  • Limit liability due to weather related incidents, injuries and damage
  • Educated safer go/no go decisions

Whatever industry you are in, weather can be a serious issue. In order to best deal with severe weather, and stay safe and alerted at all times, contact Chicago Communications today to learn about equipping your two-way radios with this technology.
