Chicago Communications: Funding Your Radio System

Posted by Jill McNamara on Friday, October 28, 2011

"Share the Vision"

This video was made by Motorola Solutions, our premier partner in service, for a piece in the Motorola Road Show earlier this week. Chicago Communications was able to lend advice on the process of guiding customers to a system migration plan and how to implement this plan. As our Sales Director Tom Treichler says, "A lot of customers don't know they have the capability to go to the next level and it's up to us to educate them and tell the story of where they can go and show them the benefits of what they can do."

This discussion is based around attempting to help customers secure Grant funding for radio projects. As P25 systems are implemented, the costs are typically high, both on the mobiles and portables, and on the infrastructure. Customers believe that these radio systems are out of reach to the even the most affluent of Cities and Villages, when in fact, if a plan is developed and a proper grant request can be submitted, the chances are greater to achieve that funding to build these systems. These plans won’t happen overnight or over the course of a year. Typically these are 1 ½ to 5 year plans. Three steps should be considered:

1)      The actual radio plan (Infrastructure, Mobiles and Portables)

2)      Frequency Spectrum (Channels available for not only the end customer but County and State considerations)

3)      Grants written around this plan

As most people who have written grants can tell you, it is not about your individual department for radio funding. It is about what you can do with your surrounding towns and counties and your ability to communicate that counts.
