Best Blogs for the Health Care Industry

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray on Wednesday, March 29, 2017

ems_healthcare_moto_.jpgGiven the ever-changing nature of the health care industry, it can be difficult to keep up with all of the shifts in technology, legislation, policy and recommendations. Luckily, in additional to traditional media outlets, there are some great blogs out there from a range of different sources that provide timely updates, news and analysis.

With content including consumer-focused public health posts to opinionated political rants, here are some of the best blogs for the health care industry.

Technology / General: American EHR

This “Clinician-Powered EHR Health IT Blog & Community” is a collaboration between Cientis Technologies and the American College of Physicians. Contributors include physicians, healthcare information professionals, health care writers and consultants, among others.

The topics are broad-ranging and cover everything from health care technology trends to general tech innovation to data management.

Public Health: CDC Public Health Matters Blog

The Public Health Matters blog presents timely public health-related information in a way that’s both easy to digest and actionable. Recent posts, for instance, included ways to protect yourself from norovirus, details about how the CDC is fighting the flu, as well as resources for rural pediatric care.

Contributors include CDC staff from various departments and outside experts.

Policy / Practice / General: The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)

The JAMA Network has three diverse blogs on its site:

  • JAMA Internal Medicine Blog, which includes a collection of health care guidelines from physician task forces and the federal government, among other sources.
  • The JAMA Forum presents “expert commentary about health policy, politics, economics, and the law.”
  • Topics in Ophthalmology uses blog posts and the occasional video to cover a range of topics related to – you guessed it – ophthalmology.

Policy / General: KevinMD.Com

KevinMD.com, founded by Kevin Pho in 2004, has grown to more than 2,000 contributors including “front-line primary care doctors, surgeons, specialist physicians, nurses, medical students, policy experts.  And of course, patients, who need the medical profession to hear their voices.”

The blog and its authors take on difficult topics head-on, tackling politics, sleep deprivation among doctors, and even racial bias in health care – for patients and staff. For a sense of the site’s reach, at least on social media, the KevinMd.com Facebook page has more than 94,000 “likes.”

Consumer Focus: The New York Times — Well

With a consumer-focused approach to all things health and wellness, this collection of essays and articles from the New York Times covers a great deal of territory.

On a recent day, the featured content included: heartburn, distracted parenting, yoga and colon cancer awareness among young people. There are also opportunities to submit health questions.
