6 Public Safety Blogs to Read In 2017

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray on Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Public safety blogs are a great way to keep up on the latest trends in technology for first responders, the new upgrades that are available and the innovative ways that agencies are using communications to keep communities safe.

The best public safety blogs represent a variety of perspectives and geographies, and they’re written by everyone from police chiefs to telecommunications executives. Many are updated frequently to keep readers consistently informed about public safety issues, and some of the ones we’ve compiled may be helpful gems that you’ve previously overlooked.ems_police_img_7334-resized-600.jpg

As we look forward to the new year, here are six public safety blogs to read in 2017:

Official Blog of the International Association of Chiefs of Police

With new posts several times a week, the blog of the IACP features insights on various aspects of policing, from community engagement to the group’s Benchmarking and Analytics Tool. It’s a good place to learn about what kinds of interventions and technology other agencies are using and have found to be successful.

LexisNexis Public Safety Briefing Room

LexisNexis is a leading provider of legal and journalistic documentation, offering a massive database of public records, news and business information. The company says the Public Safety Briefing Room is “dedicated to providing resources that help public safety professionals stay abreast of industry trends and best practices to help make informed decisions.”

The data-driven blogs are written by LexisNexis staff as well as current and retired public safety officials. Posts are divided into four categories of content dedicated to data and best practices: Chief’s Corner, Analysts Perspective, Federal Insights and Investigator’s Tool Kit.

Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Blogs

PS Connect is the association’s home on the web. Its blogs offer practical information on workplace issues – including a free webinar entitled “Stop Workplace Drama in Public Safety” – as well as interviews with the Federal Communications Commission chairman and guest posts from officials and executives. Guest posts are often offered in audio format, too, for times when you’d rather listen than read.

This Just In: The Blog of the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council

This frequently updated blog features the most up-to-date information about FirstNet and interoperability efforts across the country. Post categories include Public Safety News, Broadband and the FCC. With an archive that goes back to April 2013, it’s also a valuable resource for tracking interoperability progress and challenges over time.

International City/County Management Association Blog

This well-organized blog from ICMA staff has information and ideas relevant to anyone in local government, from managers to public safety officials. The topics are tactical and wide-ranging, from election planning to crisis communications checklists.
